A Second Chance for Lukášek
One day in May, Lukášek was playing with his grandma and grandpa while his parents were painting the fence. Since he had been a very lively child from an early age, in an unguarded moment he set off towards the pool on his own. His grandparents unfortunately did not notice, and so Lukášek, carried away by his excitement, fell into the pool and began to drown. Even though the ambulance arrived within five minutes, it still took a while before Lukášek could be revived and his little heart started beating again. A rushed journey to the University Hospital in Ostrava followed. Lukášek's condition was very critical. He spent ten days in an induced coma and could breathe only thanks to a ventilator. He fought for every further day of his life. After some time he was transferred to the Fifejdy City Hospital, where he underwent treatment in a hyperbaric chamber twelve times. This therapy helped him greatly, and he slowly began to make his first steps of progress. Even so, the little boy's brain was damaged more than expected. According to the doctors, the greatest chance of significant progress is within three years of the injury.
Lukášek has been given a new hope, one that lies in the application of stem cells, which have helped other children with the same problem. These undifferentiated cells travel through the body and repair everything that is wrong. Nor can he ease up on his intensive rehabilitation and other treatment procedures. He will also need essential medical aids. All of this, however, calls not only for an enormous effort to keep fighting and never give up, but also for a large sum of money that his parents unfortunately do not have.
And what is new? Lukášek spent the whole of April at a spa with his mum, which once again moved him forward. His fine motor skills have improved – he now turns the pages of his plastic book by himself, and he has also made progress in showing his emotions – he wants to cuddle with his parents. He is also trying to pull himself up on various things.
